Energy Saving Tips
- Replace your energy hogs with ENERGYSTAR® appliances, and you'll save money,
save energy and get a fresh, modern look for your home.
- Stop heating an empty house. A programmable thermostat conserves
energy and saves money by automatically adjusting your home heating
needs. About 30 percent of home energy costs come from heating. A programmable
thermostat lets you lower the temperature at night and while you’re away, and raise
it when you're home. Set the thermostat once and forget it.
- Install smart power strips for all home electronics. Even when
home electronics are turned off, they’re on standby mode and that uses energy.
All devices that use a remote control or microprocessor -- including computers,
printers, TVs DVD/VCRs, stereos, set-top boxes and home networks -- fall into this
category. Smart power strips have a switch, allowing you to safely turn equipment
off completely when not in use. Plus, smart power strips protect sensitive electronic
equipment from power surges. (Smart Strip Power Strip)
- Set the temperature on your hot water heater at 120 degrees. Hot water heaters
are always on, so consider installing a timer and wrapping the heater with an
insulation blanket. Consider washing all laundry in warm or cold water, since
heating water for laundry accounts for 85 percent of hot water heating bills.
- Get a timer for your engine head-bolt heater. When cold weather
comes, set the timer to come on no more than two hours before starting the vehicle.
With the timer on your extension cord, you can plug it in the night before and avoid
an extra trip out in the morning.
